Mind machines, which are sometimes called light and sound machines, are devices that are intended to cause relaxation in the user. They are designed primarily to relieve stress and give a general feeling of well being. Mind Machines are brilliant tools for mental development.
They consist of three parts:
- The goggles show the user flashing lights and moving colors. Generally they do not show images of actual things, but rather swirls of color and other patterns. Since the goggles rest so close to the eyes, nothing can be seen around them. This complete replacement of reality with lights and colors creates a hypnotic effect.
- The earphones give the user soft sounds or soft music that goes along with what is being presented visually. The sound complements the colors and lights.
- The computerized controller is more than just an on and off switch. Most machines come with several different presentations already programmed in. With some models, the controller can be connected to a computer which then allows the user to customize more programs.
